Directories are dead – Avoid them

Google has penalized most of the directories now. Many directories have lost their page rank and rankings in the search engine. Google has also penalized websites which buy and sell weblinks. Now how does one increase backlinks? Lot of webmasters are still making the mistake of submitting their websites to free directories.

If you are a webmaster and are reading this post, you would be in a puzzle on increasing back links and rankings in search engines. My answer to this is content. Content is the King and always will be. The key is to generate and post good content as often as you can. You can see that this post of mine has come after so many days. Mos of my time was spent on experimenting with links and new websites. I have experimented with some new websites by adding them to lot of free web directories. Since it was an experiment, these websites did not have any kind of huge content. Its been 3 months since these websites are made but  none of them made it to Google till date.

On the other hand, I created a site and started adding content to it on a regular basis. Not only did the website make in Google very quickly but also the bots started crawling the website pretty fast. The only backlink for this website was added by submitting an article to Digg and Reddit.

So if you have a new website, just ensure that you have good unique content on it. Do not blindly keep submitting to free directories. You will get back links automatically if your content is real good. Submit your articles to social networking websites. We need to remember that quality should be the key and not quantity. Secondly, always be in a good neighbourhood. Adding your website to cheap websites and directories will do more bad to it rather than doing any good.

I second your thoughts on not adding the websites to the free directories. I started adding only good content to my blog rather than building directory links. Of course, I would be spending time to collect links from quality websites like yours or other good content blogs.

I forgot to ask you one question though – what to do with the links added to the directories already. We would not be able to remove them out right? If that directory gets penalized by Google, then our websites are also at stake, isn’t it?

I don’t think all the sites in a directory would get penalized if the directory itself gets penalized. If my site gets penalized and I link back to Yahoo, will Google penalize Yahoo as well?…Noway. To remove your link you may ask the directory owner to do so.
