Google’s Ballon Powered Internet

Google has launched a pilot program in New Zealand to provide the Internet access similar to 3G networks in the remote areas which includes jungles, mountain ranges and archipelagos. Google uses giant balloons which carries an electronic device that communicates with the antennas located on the ground within 20km radius for Internet connectivity in those areas. Google named this initiative as Project Loon because the whole concept sounds crazy. Google deployed 30 Internet-enabled balloons and 50 testers to test the service on the ground in Canterbury region of New Zealand. The color of the balloons are white and looks like effervescent jellyfish, which uses solar power,  wind and complicated algorithms to get settled in the sky.

According to Google, the purpose of Project Loon is to provide Internet connections to the two-thirds of the population around the world who can’t access the Internet or they can’t afford it. The Search giant Google is also intending to build an enormous wireless networks across Asia and Africa, using high-altitude blimps and balloons. Finally, Google added that people will use the cell phone with their existing service provider to connect to the balloons and get internet connectivity where there is limited or no access today.

It’s very early days for us to judge about this new idea of balloon internet by Google. But we hope that balloons might become the option for connecting rural and under-developed areas for communications in case of any disasters.

  2. I am very excited about Google new project. I was not aware of the new project so I enjoy reading the article. Google is really trying to take over the Internet. If they are able to provide over two thirds of the population it will be interesting to see how this is going to be accomplished.
