Wikia Search to open soon for public

WikiaWikipedia founder Jimmy Wales is ready to make Wikia Search public in few days. Wikia search is a search engine which will allow people to improve the search technology. This will be similar to Wikipedia where any person without technical knowledge can update content. Major search engines like Google, Yahoo & MSN have never disclosed their algorithms used for search technology. This has been done to avoid spammers and competitors to beat their technology. Engineers at these major search engines have been continuously involved in providing better search results and fight spammers.

The project will be launched with 50-100 million Web pages indexed which is just a fraction of what other major search engine already has. This to me sounds like a search engine controlled by public engines which would be very easy to exploit and manipulate. I am sure there are teams eagerly waiting for this. Many black hat SEOs would love Wikia search to grow and be better than Google after Google’s regular updates and punishments for black hats.

This also means that like Wikipedia there would be some admins who can change search results and undo changes done by public. Does this sound like what is happening at Dmoz? Will be see websites belonging to these admins on top of the search results all the time? It dosen’t seem to be likely after seeing how Wikipedia is being handled nowadays. The good thing is that Google might take this a threat and start punishing the Wikipedia pages which rank high (you know how much I hate it) :d. For those of you who dont know, Google has already announced their project similar to Wikipedia known as Google Knowl. Is Wikia Search and answer to Google’s Knowl announcement? Can Wikipedia really beat Google’s search quality. All we can do is wait and see!!!!
